CSA 2013 Week 12

Dear all,We hope the back to school rush has gone smoothly. It feels a little bit more like fall these days. It’s always clear to us when we try to set up at the market. We have such a vast variety of produce (and now melons, too) that it’s hard to find the space to lay it all out. And there’s always one more thing we forgot once the table’s all full…

A few matters:
Woops!! Medium and Large shares – we accidentally put in the email that you would be getting cucumbers last week. If you were wondering where they were, it was an error on our part putting it on the list. But you do get them this week. Enjoy!
Honey: We do still have some honey left. If you are interested in a jar, or loved it so much you want more, let us know. We’ll sell it until it’s gone!

This week’s box:

Small shares, you’ll be getting chard, tomatoes, zucchini, flat kale, shishito peppers, fennel, melon*, fairytale eggplant, and pepper.

Medium shares, your box is going to be full of lettuce, chard, tomatoes, zucchini, flat kale, broccoli, fennel, melon*, fairytale eggplant, peppers, cucumbers, and white onions.

Large shares, you get everything in the medium box plus shishitos and aubergine (more standard eggplant variety), as well as some extra lettuce and some white onion.

***** Please note, the melons are big, and won’t fit in your box, so they will be in a crate/box and you can pick one for yourself. Good to know too if you’re walking/biking. They’re watermelons so they’re come prepared to carry it home.

What’s a fairy tale eggplant? Magical! They are smaller eggplant (were not throwing in tiny under-ripe aubergine!) that have fewer seeds and a less bitter taste than normal eggplant (this last fact is from the internet. Although i’s not my experience that eggplant is bitter…).

You can do a lot with a fairytale – much of what you can do with a regular eggplant. You can even pickle them. But here’s a recipe for what I think is most exciting: beer battered fairytales. From Bon Appetit magazine.

Flat leafed kale is a more tender type of kale than its curly counterpart (the one you’re probably used to!). Here is a recipe for a fennel kale and apple salad, which makes use of two items in the box and the absence of lettuce some you are facing:

We hope you have a great week. Thanks again for all your support!
